Abalo Sísmico is a band
from Aparecida de Goiânia that used to make a happy punk, as one of their
members would say, and then changed it to a raw chaotic motherfucker fast
hardcore, the band members are MUHAMAD (vocal), JEAN (baixo), JOSIAS (guitarra) e
STOPA (bateria), the
last two mentioned are the ones speaking with us.
L-R: Stopa, Muhamad, Josias, Jean |
INSETU’S ZINE. Tell us about the band, how did you start, how did
you select the name and released material.
*JOSIAS - I can’t say about the choice of the band because
the band already existed when I joined. My beginning in the band takes place in
2004. The Henrique left the vocals and then I joined as a guitarist while
Muhammad played guitar until then took the microphone. At that time we were
Muhammad (vocals), Jean and I (guitar) Pitico (bass) and Stopa (drums). The
first time I played with the Abalo Sísmico was at a gig in the old
" “Terra do Nunca” alongside other bands like: Then came other
presentations were mostly in dive bars, the back of trucks or anything else of
this kind on the outskirts of Aparecida de Goiania and Goiania. We recorded
some stuff that is simply a poorly played and recorded (ehehehehe) which was
taken three songs that were included in the "“ECOS DO SUBMUNDO" by
KILO KONTROLL REKORDS and MINGAU'S PRODUCTIONS launched in Finland, along
with other bands from Brazil. If I'm not mistaken this record came out because
of the interest one of the FORÇA MACABRA guys. Then Pitico left the band
and then I and Jean shared guitar and bass duties. After a while Again we get
another bassist (Seu Wilson), but did not last long and now we are confident
that we will be only ourselves.
*STOPA - Dude, the band formed it in
2000 or 2001 I think with the name was Esquizofrenicos from Ap. de
Goiania with our friend Testa on vocals, Muhammad on guitar, who is now
our vocals, Pitico on bass and Victor on drums; one day their drummer missed a
gig in the former porão in the center of Goiânia, where I joined them playing drums,
the sound was quite happy punk rock, but i accelerate the beat, our friend
Testa did not like it and left out, which in turn the band became hard core,
Jean who during this time was playing with Decarga Negativa also joined
us on the guitar and later on our brother Josias, so we changed the name to ABALO
SÍSMICO, after the bassist left and established the formation
we have today.
The songs of our demo has been chosen while we were running out of time to record, we recorded all in 2 hours and that record was what we got, it is on MySpace, take a look. www.myspace.com / abalosismicohc

INSETU’S ZINE. What is the theme of their songs and how is the
writing process?
*JOSIAS - The lyrics portray the
miseries conceived by us humans and then we hate, as urban violence, impunity,
places without the slightest justice (if justice is something that exists). The
chaos that is generally promoted by us. Who writes the lyrics often is Muhamad and
Stopa. To reproduce it on guitar I inspire myself on all the filth we all
listen.
*STOPA - we usually like to talk about
politics, our lived experience, the movement, the walks but this was never
a rule. Composition is a pain in the ass, Muhamad made up most of the
songs, occasionally I do some, we do the instrumental and let
muhamad fuck himself with the vocals, and he does it well.
INSETU’S ZINE. Is there any piece of art, literature or film
that you think important or that somehow have influenced the band's music?
*JOSIAS
- I do not particularly get influenced by any of this. The TV cop shows that
are displayed at lunchtime have occupied this space (heheeh). These
programs are BRUTALHOMICÍDIODEATHPORRADATHRASHPEDOFILIAPUNKCRACKHARDCOREGRIND
*STOPA - None of those things make my
mind, the Taturana’s bar (kind of dive bar on the outskirts of Aparecida de
Goiania) where we used to play, time spent with our friends, our trips, the
everyday troubles, the expired beer our friend Kezio used to get for us, these
things are what inspired us and still inspiring.
INSETU’S ZINE. If all the songs in the world were being destroyed
right now and you had the chance to save five albums, which albums would be? Why?
*JOSIAS
- SEPULTURA Beneath The Remains: In
my opinion this is the best album of SEPULTURA. It was the first CD I ever had,
and for long was the only one I had (hehehe). Maybe that's why I am so fond. I
bought this CD from a kid who was playing him like a boomerang for R$ 0.50 and
some shit [something around £ 0,12] (hehehee).
STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN, Texas Flood: no comments, sharp and fast.
CARCASS, Heartwork: Lately Carcass is the band that I hear most, that sound is just beautiful.
MORPHINE, Cure For Pain: Banda excellent. I especially like this band because of the saxophone.
DORSAL ATLANTICA, Straight: great fucking album from a great fucking band.

*STOPA - Aaah man !!!!!!!!!! I do not have
the pretension of saving only five albums, there are so many good
bands that only five will be too hard, let everything get lost, we do it all
over again.
INSETU’S ZINE. What is the most memorable show you've had so
far?
*JOSIAS - For me perhaps the second time
I played with the band for being a day CÓLERA
had played.
*STOPA – We had several good shows, when
we played with CÓLERA was the
coolest, because it's just a band that we always listened and share the stage
with that guys was immensurable pleasure, even if I was totally wasted,
it was wicked.
INSETU’S ZINE. How is the Goiás scene lately? Any band you recommend?
*JOSIAS - Speaking
about Goiás scene is complicated. Here we do not have a proper scene, we can
see is a bunch of fools who still like the very dirty and some people keep the
shows going on, making bands, etc.. However, I think we have improved a lot.
Today you can see a more united scene. But there is still much to do, not only
the scene of Goiás, but as well as across the national scene. We need the bands
and the public be more interested in their underground, the scene I have seen
sometimes as a short motivation. Everyone wants to play, everyone wants to dig
in, but still very centralized, we need to do more gigs in the suburbs (against
it come the laziness that comes from both sides and lack of resources). I think
the scene is not very good, but it was worse and I believe it will improve with
time.
About the bands, there are good bands, to recommend a band is always fucking hard, but I think AGAINST and OVERCOME are bands that can be recommended, they’ve got a kick ass beat.

*STOPA – It’s evolving, is going a little
more union, this I speak from the hardcore scene, there are still conflicts
that are somewhat strictly necessary in the most it is fucking good, there is
always gigs and some stuff happening. By now there is a lot of good bands , we
played 16/07/11 with a band that played their first gig, GERAÇÕES
PERDIDAS they’ve got some great songs, I also like DEATH FROM ABOVE
and another called AGAINST also very good.
INSETU’S ZINE. What is your opinion about the controversial
teaching materials against
homophobia in Brazilian schools, the infamous "gay
kit"?
*JOSIAS - I honestly think it was a mistaken
action. I do not think that this approach would have any effect; much less think
it would be a valid program while I see no kit anti racial prejudice, religious,
social class or any other kind of prejudice financed by the same organs. I
personally do not agree with spending public money with a material that would
not add anything, it is easy to see that the teachings of those schools are not
worth anything, what would make me believe that such material would change the conception
of homosexuality among those who would use them? I think it would get even
worse. I remember the time I was in primary and secondary education, there was a
discipline (Religious Education, perhaps still exists), all you could see was a
way of saying that Christianity was the right one, I do not see satisfactory
results created in society with that kind of teaching, until today those same educators
and students do not maintain respect for each other, sometimes by being a Catholic,
Protestant, African-Brazilian religion, atheist, etc.. Likewise I find it
unlikely that an individual would respect the sexuality of others with this
type of kit (I watched one of the videos and have not seen anything educational
in the video). For those who know the reality of our country knows that there
are issues that should be given priority as child sexual exploitation,
illiteracy, health, hunger, slave labor, among others. Yes these cases are worthy
of spending public money, but on the contrary, are left aside. I am opposed to
this type of material to be taught in schools and believe that many homosexuals
share the same idea. The family still has the right to educate their children;
this is not the role of an unprepared government. It is the government's role to
intervene when the applied family education violates the human rights of every
citizen, be it gay, black, atheist or not, worker, student, children and
elderly, etc…
*STOPA – I do not agree with all this
shit, the school's role is to lead the way, teach and instruct the student to
have their own opinions, and not encourage prejudice, and that's what it
seems to me, because who already studied in a Brazilian public school knows how
the school system is in relation to homosexuality, and Yes we should encourage
an end to homophobia but not with those videos because that will not work, we
need a more serious project, this is what I think.
INSETU’S ZINE. What should we expect Abalo Sísmico from now on?
*JOSIAS - We are working in new songs
and when everything is ready we intend to launch a record with a better
quality. In the most is that, hopefully we will not lose this pace and do more
concrete work.
*STOPA - we are preparing a new
material, hopefully by September will be already in hand, with more mature we
will do some good shit, let's see what comes out there.
INSETU’S ZINE. Thanks for the interview open space for you.
* JOSIAS - Thanks for remembering Abalo
Sísmico and for those who want to know our music can listen to it on myspace.com/abalosismicohc
or download it from the Licor De Chorume.
* STOPA - We do appreciate the space, a
big hug to you and you are missed here, cheers Kapitão
Küzio.....
